We were stationed at NAS Whidbey Island from 2003 until 2008. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a really gorgeous area, and I highly recommend taking the time to go out and really explore the area. Oak Harbor is a small town, but you could literally find everything you need *on* Whidbey Island. When we were there, I remember there would be months between trips ?¢‚Ǩ?ìoff island?¢‚Ǩ¬ù if we didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t really *need* to go to the mall. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a bit of a drive to get to a ?¢‚Ǩ?ìreal mall,?¢‚Ǩ¬ù but well worth it in the end ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú both Burlington and Bellingham are great to visit. Seattle is about a 2 hour drive, depending on the traffic, but is another great city to visit. Seattle Center, where the Space Needle is, has lots of activities in addition to visiting the Needle ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú like the Experience Music Project ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s very easy to find your way down to the piers and Pike Place Market.

The weather is exactly what you would expect for the Pacific Northwest ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú lots of rain, cold in the winter. The base will usually shut down for 2 inches of snow. This is not, in fact, due to ill preparedness and has more to do with the massive hill outside the one gate that will ice over and is absolutely treacherous in inclement weather.
